This document serves to instruct how to install starwind on Windows Server 2k8R2 and sharing an iscsi target.

  1. Visit Starwind Software's website, and obtain a license file and the installer. For convience, these may be obtained from the following URLs. Please note that using these for any purpose than temporarily for completing this lab is a violation of the license agreement.

  1. Launch the installer, choosing the defaults for options. When you get to the 'License Key Type' pane, choose 'Thank you, I do have a key already', then navigate to the licensekey.swk on the next installer pane. Complete the installation, and launch the management console.
  2. Next, if you don't see 'Targets' on the left hand dropdown, click on your server (probably something like 'W2K8R2001') and click the 'Connect' button. You should then have a targets dropdown. Select it, and then click the 'Add Device' button at the top.
  3. Now choose 'Virtual Hard Disk'
  4. Next, we want 'Image File Device'
  5. Select 'Create a new virtual disk'
  6. Now navigate to where you would like the virtual disk image to reside on the server. I find I prefer to put them in C:Disk Images. Note that the disk filename itself must end in .img.
  7. Adjust the size to fit your needs, and click next.
  8. Accept the defaults of Asynchronous mode and Automagic Header Size
  9. For our purposes, Write-back caching is sufficient. In situations where data integrity is critical, 'Write-through caching' is preferable, although will lead to lower performance.
  10. Accept the default cache size of 128mb, and click next.
  11. Enter a spaceless alphanumeric string into the target alias field. (this is not required, but it makes our life easier)
  12. DO NOT CHANGE THE IQN
  13. Click next, and finish the 'Add Device Wizard'
  14. Congrats, you're done, and the iSCSI target is shared!
