Take the AutoCAD 2000 installation disc (Architectural Desktop release 3 in our case, which is based on AutoCAD 2000) and create an ISO image of the disc. I used MagicISO because it allowed me to make the image, and delete the folder for Netmeeting from the ISO image. 2) Install Windows XP 32 bits inside a virtual PC (use an old unused Windows XP installation disc) 3) Install Autocad 2000 inside the virtual PC XP installation 4) Enable the Folder integration between host and guest, so the files you create in there are copied to a folder inside your Vista x64 installation (for printing, email etc). The good news is, it looks like installing on Windows 10 is smoother than it was installing on Windows 8 or 8.1. There may have even been some improvements. Now I haven’t put AutoCAD to work in any arduous kind of ways, but from what I can tell from a quick poke about, all seems well.

Many companies design their software to run on a specific version of Windows. When a new Windows version, like Windows 8, appears a few years later, some older programs feel threatened by their new environment and refuse to work.

If an older program refuses to run under Windows 8, you still have hope because of Windows’ secret Compatibility mode. This mode tricks programs into thinking that they’re running under their favorite older version of Windows, letting them run in comfort.

If your old program has problems with Windows 8, follow these steps:

1. Right-click the program’s icon and choose Properties.

2. When the Properties dialog box appears, click the Compatibility tab and then click the Run Compatibility Troubleshooter button.

   In its robotic way, Windows 8 tries to guess what version of Windows your program needs, and then it applies the changes. If the program begins working, you’re through.

   If the program still has trouble, though, move to Step 3.

3. In the Compatibility Mode section, select the Run This Program in Compatibility Mode For check box and select the program’s desired Windows version from the drop-down list.

   Check your program’s box or look at its manual to see what version of Windows it expects.

4. Click OK and then try running your program again to see whether it works better.
